Put your commute to work for you. Save time, money and help the environment. Consider the following ways to change your daily commute:
  • Walking - Consider your general health and the route to work when deciding if this commute alternative is right for you. You may want to begin slowly, 1 or 2 days a week, gradually building up to walking full-time. Typically, most walkers commute about 2 miles 1-way to work. Other considerations include walking shoes, appropriate clothing, route selection, and time of walk.
  • Bicycling - Bicycling is a healthy, quiet, clean, economical, and fun way to get to work. Many Harford County employees bicycle to work every day. When considering bicycling as an alternative, remember to brush up on riding in traffic safely, bike rules, bike basics, outfitting your bike, bike security, bikes and transit (HTL and MARC have bicycle accommodations.
  • Carpooling and Vanpooling - Carpooling is when 2 or more commuters ride together in a private automobile on a continuing basis, regardless of their relationship to each other or the cost of sharing agreements. Carpooling is the simplest and most common "ridesharing" arrangement.

    Vanpooling is an important and economical option for individuals commuting long distances. This option is popular in the APG area because of longer commute distances. Many companies give vanpoolers tax-free incentives transportation benefits each month.
  • Transit - For many commuters, public (or sometimes private) transit is the transportation of choice; for others it’s the ideal back-up transportation. Public transit is a dependable commuting option that delivers employees and customers to work and home on a regular schedule.

    Harford Transit Link offers economical, convenient routes within Harford County. For those commuting to points south, the MARC Train system, located in Aberdeen and Edgewood, offer commuting options, the MTA commuter bus system and light rail system is also utilized by many local residents commuting to Baltimore.
