State's Attorney - Joe Cassilly |
Joseph Ignatius Cassilly was born in 1950 and is a lifelong resident of Harford County. He is a 1968 graduate of John Carroll High School. He joined U.S Army in 1968 and served with F. Co. 75th Rangers, 25th Inf. Div. He was awarded a Combat Infantry Badge, Purple Heart and Army Commendation Medal. As a result of his injuries in Viet Nam he uses a wheelchair.
He is a 1974 graduate University of Arizona with a B.A. in Psychology and received his juris doctor in 1977 from the University of Baltimore Law School
After law school he became an adjunct faculty member at Harford Community College from 1977-1982. He was sworn in as an Assistant State's Attorney in October 1977.
In 1982, he was elected State's Attorney for Harford County and has been re-elected six times. During this time he helped to establish two Narcotics Task Forces, a domestic violence section, the Child Advocacy Center and the Family Justice Center, 3 drug courts, a DUI court and a mental health court. The State's Attorney's Office has grown to 70 employees in 4 locations.
Joe Cassilly is active with the Maryland State's Attorneys' Association having held several offices including two terms as president of the Association. He is the past-President of the National District Attorneys Association and is on the Board of Directors of NDAA.
Joe is married to Diana Susan Cassilly and they share five children, and two grandchildren. They live in Benson, Maryland. Joe is a lector at Saint Ignatius Catholic Church in Hickory. He has been active on issues for the disabled, serving on design teams for both Baltimore sports stadiums and other large products. In 2002, Joe was named an Outstanding Marylander with a Disability. In 2007, he was given a Legacy of Excellence in Litigation Award by the University of Baltimore Law School.
