DISTRICT COURT DIVISION... |
The District Court Unit:
This division prosecutes misdemeanor offenses, such as traffic
offenses, violations of county and municipal ordinances and other
crimes of a less serious nature.
Mediation Program:
Many of the cases filed in District Court can be settled without
having to go to trial at less expense to the Court. To
facilitate the settlement of cases, the State's Attorney's Office
participates in the Community Mediation Referral program.
Selected cases suitable for mediation are referred to the Community
Mediation Board. For more information call 410.638.4807 or visit
the Harford
County Mediation website.
Bad Check Restitution Program:
Millions of dollars are lost every year by merchants as a result
of bad checks being passed to their business. Bad checks
affect everyone in terms of higher consumer costs that must be
passed to offset losses, and increased taxes to cover additional
costs for law enforcement and prosecution. The Bad Check
Restitution Program assists local merchants with bad check losses.
The primary goal of the program is to obtain full restitution for
the victim without adding to the financial burden of the criminal
justice system. This program operates in conjunction with
American Correct Counseling Services. Merchants in Harford County
benefit because they receive restitution without paying any
collection fees. First time bad check offenders are given the
opportunity to avoid criminal prosecution by attending a mandatory,
eight hour intervention class, in addition to paying restitution.
All of this is accomplished without any cost to the taxpayers. For
more information you can visit their website at
www.accs-inc.com.
