Dion F. Guthrie District A
Dion F. Guthrie is the Council Member for District A which includes: Edgewood, Joppatowne, Joppa, Magnolia and part of Winter’s Run. He was elected in 2002 and re elected in 2006.
Councilman Guthrie received an associate degree from Dundalk Community College in 1991, an associate degree from McKendree School of Religion in 1992, a bachelor’s degree from McKendree School of Religion in 1996, and a bachelor’s degree from Antioch University in 1998. He graduated from the Harford Leadership Academy in 2000 and the Sheriff’s Police Academy in 2007. Councilman Guthrie has been a resident of Harford County in the Joppatowne area for over forty years and is enthusiastically looking forward to serving his second term on the Harford County Council.
As a member of the Harford County Council, Councilman Guthrie serves on the Commission on Disabilities, Community Mediation Commission, Audit Committee and Harford Cable Network (HCN) Advisory Board. He has been appointed to the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission by the County Executive and also serves on the BRAC Committee of the Susquehanna Region of the Workforce Investment Board of Harford and Cecil Counties where he serves on the Executive and Business Service Committees. In addition, he serves on the BRAC Committee for the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Goddard Alliance, in Greenbelt, MD. Councilman Guthrie serves on the Board of the Greater Edgewood Education Foundation (GEEF) and as Legislative Liaison to the Route 40 Business Association. He is also a member of the Joppa Moose Lodge and the Joppatowne Lions Club. Councilman Guthrie was instrumental in bringing the Guardian Angels to Harford County to aid in fighting crime.
In 1997, Councilman Guthrie was appointed “Admiral of the Chesapeake Bay” by the Governor of Maryland for his maritime interest, support of protection and clean-up of the Chesapeake Bay, and his work with special needs children. Since one of his grandsons attends John Archer School, Councilman Guthrie has become actively involved with helping special needs children. On a lighter note, Councilman Guthrie had the honor of carrying the Olympic Torch for the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah; and after Cal Ripkin played his last game as an Oriole, Councilman Guthrie volunteered his personal car to drive Cal around the field at Camden Yards. Cal autographed Councilman Guthrie’s 1983 World Series baseball -- the last ball signed by Cal, in the field of play, as an Oriole.
Councilman Guthrie is married to his wife, Diana; and they have six children and four grandchildren.
