James V. “Capt’n Jim” McMahan District C
James V. “Capt’n Jim” McMahan, Jr. is the Council Member for District C, which includes the Town of Bel Air. He was elected in 2006 after serving four years as a Bel Air Town Commissioner.
Councilman McMahan was born and raised in Bel Air, MD and attended Bel Air schools. He received a B.A. degree from Western Maryland (now McDaniel) College and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the US Army upon graduation. He also attended the University of Baltimore Law School. Councilman McMahan retired as a Colonel after serving more than thirty years in various military units.
As a member of the Harford County Council, Councilman McMahan serves as Sheriff’s Office Liaison, and on the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council and the Local Emergency Planning Commission.
Councilman McMahan was affiliated with WBAL Radio and Television for many years and became General Manager of WVOB in Bel Air in 1968. In 1978 Capt’n Jim and a group of investors purchased WAMD. He became the majority stockholder and hosted the morning show until his retirement in 2003.
Capt’n Jim served as a sworn officer with the Bel Air Police Department and is a Life Member of the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company. He was instrumental in the formation of both the Bel Air Community Band and the Bel Air Community Chorus. Capt’n Jim was the president and founder of the Ripken Museum in Aberdeen and served as Board President for eight years.
Jim is the son of the late Chief (Emeritus) J. Vaughan McMahan, and the late Selena P. McMahan, a well-known Bel Air High School Biology teacher.
