TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING
Transportation Engineering is responsible for coordinating new
construction and repairs for bridges, reviewing subdivision plans for roads and
stormdrains, and coordinating roadway repairs throughout Harford County. This section is also responsible for
preparing traffic studies and determining street lighting and traffic sign requirements.
The County survey group is also a part of the Transportation Engineering section.
The Bridge Program consists
of biennial visual inspections of the 204 County
maintained bridges. Based on the condition of the structure, recommendations are
made about repairs or replacement of the bridge. These rep airs can include stream stabilization around the bridge
abutments or repairs to the structural portions of the bridge such as the deck or
wingwalls. These recommendations for repair or replacement are used to develop capital
projects.
Subdivision Review consists of plan review and approval for new
roadway and stormdrain construction. For all new construction, developers must submit
engineered drawings that meet the current state and local regulations for road and
stormdrain design.
The Pavement Management Program
involves the annual inspection
and evaluation of approximately 450 miles of County
maintained asphalt roadways. Based on this evaluation, recommendations are made
about repairs or replacement of the roadway. These recommendations for repair or
replacement are used to develop capital projects.
The Traffic group is responsible for verifying that County maintained roadways are as safe as
possible and can accommodate traffic volumes. To maintaine this, traffic studies are prepared that investigate
traffic counts, the need for traffic calming devices or the need for
changes or installation of new traffic signals or traffic
signs. This group also assists the Department of Planning and Zoning in the
development of the County Transportation Plan. This plan establishes future County roads
and major improvements to existing County roads.
The Surveying group is
responsible for maintaining existing County
survey monuments and establishing new monuments as needed. This group also
prepares plat and topographic information for
use by the engineers.
