Fire hydrant flushing allows us to eliminate or expel sediments and other solids that
might collect in our mains, thereby providing cleaner water to your home. The Division of
Water and Sewer has an on-going program of flushing the distribution lines to verify that
the water delivered to your home meets all EPA safe drinking water standards. This is a
bi-annual program. Flushing is done by opening fire hydrants and letting the water
rush out. There may be a temporary discoloration of water, changes in water pressure, or
temporary interruption of water service. However, it will not effect the potability of the
water.
