    PETITION CANDIDACY:  To be nominated by petition as a general election candidate, a person must meet the legal qualifications for any given public office.  They must also be registered to vote as either an Independent or Declined to Affiliate or a member of a newly recognized, non-primary party.  They may also be registered to vote as affiliated with a non-recognized party.  A person may not be nominated by petition as a general election candidate if they are affiliated with a political party recognized in Maryland which nominates by primary election (Democrat or Republican).  For more information on receiving the proper forms and where completed forms are to be filed, contact the appropriate election office for a petition candidacy packet or check the SBE website at http://www.elections.state.md.us/petitions/.
