Services from the Harford County Office on Aging...

The Harford County Office on Aging provides services, programs and special events to enhance and improve the quality of life for seniors. Many programs promote practical help for healthy, active seniors who live in Harford County while other programs assist seniors who are frail or who might be at risk. The Office on Aging works closely in a cooperative effort with the Harford County Health Department's Adult Evaluation and Review Service and the Harford County Department of Social Services to coordinate all aspects of service for older adults.

OVERVIEW OF SERVICES
AARP Tax Volunteers: Trained AARP volunteers provide this free service for seniors age 60 and over and for low-income individuals. Services include: answering questions, providing blank tax forms, checking already-prepared forms and actual preparing of forms. This service is available between February 1st and April 15th each year. Call 410.638.3425.

Guardianship: The Office on Aging may be appointed by court order to serve as guardian of a person or individuals age 65 and older when there is no one available to make necessary decisions regarding their welfare.

Housing Information: Information is provided on a wide range of options for senior citizen housing including independent living, assisted housing, boarding homes and nursing homes.

In-Home Services: The Senior Care Program organizes the delivery of services to the homebound such as shopping, personal hygiene, cleaning, medications, nursing care, and respite care. Home visits are made to assess the needs of people in their homes and to assist in coordinating community resources to enable seniors to remain independent in the community for as long as possible. The Geriatric Evaluation Service of the Health Department assists people who because of health, social or environmental problems are at risk of losing their independence.

Information and Assistance: Senior Information and Assistance is a program designed to provide a "one stop" source of information about services and benefits for people age 60 and over. Senior Information and Assistance staff members answer questions, provide information on services and benefits, make referrals to agencies or businesses, help to coordinate services and provide follow-up to ensure that the services requested have been received. Senior Information and Assistance personnel are available for home visits should the caller be unable to come to the office. Call 410.638.3025.

Loan Closet: Harford County residents age 60 and over can borrow the following on a temporary basis: walkers, canes, crutches, portable commodes and other medical/assistive devices when needed. Call 410.638.3025.

Long-Term Care Information and Assistance: The Nursing Home Ombudsman provides information about nursing homes and helps to protect the rights of residents of nursing homes, as well as board and care homes.

Meals: A noon meal is served Monday through Friday at each senior center. Home Delivered Meals for homebound elderly persons are served by Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland in cooperation with the Office on Aging. Call 410.838.0013 for assistance. [more...]

Ombudsman Program: The Ombudsman Program provides a channel for nursing home residents and their families to express concerns about nursing home care while preserving their privacy. Ombudsman staff members visit nursing homes on a regular basis and advocate on behalf of the residents. It is the role of the Ombudsman Program to receive complaints and concerns, investigate each matter, and take the necessary steps to resolve them. Call 410.638.3025.

Senior Centers: Harford County has four Senior Centers located in Aberdeen, Bel Air, Edgewood and Highland (Street). In addition to the daily meal program, each Senior Center offers a wide range of activities, that include fine arts, crafts, ceramics, educational classes, physical fitness and exercise, recreational activities and field trips. Residents age 60 and over and their spouses (even when under age 60) are eligible. For further information, call the Senior Center nearest you.

Senior Health Insurance Counseling: The Senior Health Insurance Program provides information on Medicare coverage and claims. Staff and volunteers provide information on Medigap policies, medical assistance guidelines and Medicare HMOs. Senior Healthscope: The Office on Aging annually develops a wide range of health programs, health screenings, fitness programs and other health education options for seniors adults.

Transportation: Our fleet of cars, lift-equipped vans and buses provide rides for Senior Citizens and person with disabilities when private transportation is not available.

  • In-County trips to medical appointments, senior centers, shopping, etc.
  • Local public bus transportation around both Bel Air and Aberdeen.
  • Countywide public bus transportation liking Havre de Grace, Bel Air, Churchville, Edgewood and Joppatowne.
