Tax Benefits/Options
There are other federal and state programs which can help meet the needs or reduce the living costs and expenses of people 65 or older. These include things such as the homeowners property tax credits, renters tax credits and low interest loans for home rehabilitation.
The Internal Revenue Services (IRS) has a number of publications that are of particular interest to disabled individuals and/or their families. Publication 907, "Tax Information for Handicapped Individuals," explains what income is/is not taxable, what medical deductions are possible, tax credits for elderly and disabled persons, etc. Publication 524 explains tax credits for elderly and permanently disabled in more detail.
The Tax Counseling for the Elderly program is operated by AARP volunteers who have been trained by the IRS. These volunteers prepare tax returns for older people with uncomplicated financial affairs. To schedule an appointment, call 410.638.3425 from February 1 through April 15.
