Mentoring Programs

Anna's House
Anna's Guys
Anna's Guys works with school aged kids at the Anna's House shelter in Bel Air.  We provide strong male role models to children who otherwise have limited or not positive interaction with adult men.  Volunteers need only be men 18 years or older and be able to devote two hours every 4-6 weeks on Wednesday evenings (7-8:30p.m.) and/or Saturday afternoons (2-4 p.m.), primarily to provide organized fun on-site with one or two other men (i.e., tossing a football or frisbee, playing board games, playground time, walking on the trail behind the shelter, etc.).

Best Buddies Maryland
Citizen Program
Best Buddies provides an opportunity for volunteers to be matched, in a one-to-one friendship, with adults who have a mild to moderate mental retardation. Volunteers are required to make a one-year commitment, contact their buddy once a week, and meet with their buddy twice a month. These meetings are scheduled at the convenience of both the buddy and the volunteer. Volunteers are encouraged to develop a natural friendship with their buddies and to participate in activities that the volunteer and buddy can enjoy together.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central MD
BBBS pairs adult mentors with children between the ages of 8-12 who are primarily from single-parent homes. These children are in need of a positive role model and caring friend. This is a community based program that only asks for a 2-time per month commitment. It is a wonderful opportunity for adults and children alike to have fun together doing whatever activities they both enjoy-be it playing basketball, attending a play, going to an Orioles' game, or just sitting together to talk.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford
Mentors at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County work with youth ages 6-18 during club hours which are as follows: Mon-Fri 2:30-8 pm, school snow days 12:00 pm-5:00 pm. Mentors meet with their mentees for approximately one hour per week. These times are planned to suit the schedule of both the mentor and mentee. Mentor/mentee activities include pool, foosball, ping-pong, gym activities, arts and crafts, photography, ceramics, life skills, computers, games, and academic assistance.

CASA of Harford County
CASA volunteers work with children who have been abused, and neglected. Volunteers gather facts, make recommendations and represent the child's best interest in Juvenile Court. Volunteers must be at least 21 years old, attend 30 hours of training, and commit to one year of service.

Church of the Resurrection
The Copley Kids Program
The Copley Kids mentors work with students in grades K through high school. Hours are Tues, Wed, and Thurs, 3:30-6pm. Program activities include academic assistance, games, computer activities, helping with social skills, and some outside recreation.

Maryland National Guard
Freestate ChalleNGe Academy
Freestate Challenge Academy is a 5-1/2 month residential program, with a 12 month post-residential phase, totaling 17-1/2 months. The program works with 16-18 year old male and female, non-adjudicated, drug free high school drop-outs. Mentors spend the residential phase building a relationship with the cadet. After graduation, the Academy will track the progress of the cadet through their mentor. One three-hour Orientation & Training session is required.

The Arc Northern Chesapeak Region
Family Partnership Program
Family Partnership Program is a treatment foster care and adoption program serving children with special needs. Mentors will provide support and encouragement for these children and develop a natural friendship with their mentee.

Villa Maria
Therapeutic Mentoring Program
Villa Maria's Therapeutic Mentoring Program challenges mentors to a new level of commitment and expertise. Children in this program have been identified with emotional and/or behavioral special needs. Volunteers are trained to support and enhance treatment goals determined by the child's therapist. Through appropriate activities and ongoing support, the mentor will provide a successful, trusting relationship, a positive role model, one on one support and experience with life skills. Therapeutic mentors are expected to fulfill a one-year minimum relationship and to have weekly contact with their matched child.

Faith Based Mentoring Programs

Inner County Outreach
School-based mentoring program
Inner County Outreach mentors work with students in grades 3 through 8. Mentors spend, at least, 2 hours a week, one of which is with the student in school. Out-of-school activities include mentor-student chosen activities, as well as organization-sponsored activities. All visitations and activities are designed to improve grades, improve school attendance, decrease behavior problems, increase positive youth behavior or any other areas of the student's life.

Mt. Zion United Methodist Church
Mt. Zion mentors and mentees attend the church and meet together in a variety of settings. Mentors meet with their mentees for a minimum of twice a month. Mentors and mentees have fun together doing whatever activities they both enjoy. Activities may include biking, hiking, sports, crafts, woodworking, and more. The goal of the ministry is to strenghen the social, emotional, and spiritual development of each child.

New Destiny Evangelistic Ministries
This mentoring program is designed for young people ages 8 through adult. Mentors will meet with mentees at least once a week for an hour and a half. The program is structured to accommodate individual and group mentoring.

St. James AME Church
UJIMA Outreach Program
UJIMA works with African-American boys ages 6 to 18, providing workshops, leadership programs, and community service. Mentors are needed approximately one or two hours each week to encourage and support young men.

St. Paul Lutheran Church
Haven on the Hill
Haven on the Hill meets on Wednesday from 3-6pm. Mentors assist with study time, social skill development, and service projects. Mentors and mentees enjoy sports, games, and other activities.

School Mentoring Programs

Aberdeen High School
Maryland Tomorrow Program
Mentors work with students in 9-12th grade, and meet with students during or after school. Meeting times are planned according to class meeting time. Mentor/mentee activities include helping with social skills and assisting with academics.

Aberdeen Middle School
ACT (after-school collaborative tutoring)
ACT provides tutoring to students in 6, 7, and 8th grade on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-4pm. Each tutor is assigned a small group of students (3-4) to work with consistently so that a relationship develops between tutor and student. In this way, tutors also become mentors as well, and students establish a relationship with a caring adult.

Bel Air High School
BAHS Mentoring Program
The Bel Air High School Mentoring Program provides a one-on-one caring support system to enhance the student's educational success. Believing that each student in invaluable and irreplaceable, our mentors are committed to assisting their mentee to achieve excellence, develop understanding, and define the steps required to produce success. Mentor commitment is one hour per week.

Bel Air Middle School
Kids C.A.N.
The mentors at Bel Air Middle meet regularly with our sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. These meetings are scheduled within the school day at times which are convenient to both mentor and mentee. The sessions include a variety of activities such as self-esteem building, social skill development, and academic assistance.

C. Milton Wright High School
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Maryland
Mission Is Possible (MIP) Mentoring Program with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Maryland MIP provides one-on-one mentoring for all male students, grades 9 – 12. Mentors guide students through the maze of high school, assisting them with academic as well as life lessons. Most meetings are scheduled at the school during a time that’s convenient for mentors and students (at least once a week), and there are once a month meetings of all mentors and students after school.

Church Creek Elementary School
Church Creek Elementary School mentors work with students pre-K to 5th grade. Mentors meet with their mentees for approximately one hour per week during school hours. Activities include helping with social skill development, and assisting with academics.

Deerfield Elementary School
Deerfield Elementary School mentors work with mentees in grades K-5, usually during the school day, and/or outside of school. Mentors meet with children weekly for an hour. Mentors assist mentees with social and academic development. They often provide a link between the parents and the teachers.

Dublin Elementary School
Mentoring Program
Dublin Elementary mentors work with students in Pre-K to grade 5 for twenty to thirty minutes a week. They meet with their mentees during regular school hours in the school building. Mentors work on academic, social, or personal goals with their mentees and attend meetings to share ideas on how to work positively with their special student.

Edgewood Elementary School
Edgewood Volunteer Mentors
Edgewood Elementary School mentors work with students from K-5th grade. Mentors provide support and encouragement on personal and academic endeavors. Typically mentors visit students weekly for approximately 30 to 45 minutes between the hours of 8:30-3:30, and in some cases, before or after school. Activities may include games, arts and crafts, sharing hobbies, and personal interests, and talking over lunch. The time is planned around the student and mentor schedules.

Edgewood High School
Maryland's Tomorrow Business Mentoring Partnership
Edgewood High School mentors journey with students in their lives as high school students in their pursuit of career objectives and in the development of their own ethical and moral values. Mentors work with 9th grade students during school hours, 8-2:15pm. Mentors meet with their mentees for about one hour per week. Mentors help students by assisting in academics and social skills development.

Edgewood Middle School
Girl's Mentoring Program
Edgewood Middle School mentees meet once a week with their mentors. First priority on their agenda is to establish communicative relationships and then move on to address both academic and personal goals. A yearly trip and sporadic lunches are also planned for the mentees and mentors.

Emmorton Elementary School
Mentoring Program
Emmorton Elementory School mentors work with students in grades K-5. Mentors meet with students during school hours, 8:30-3:30, and in some cases arrangements can be made to meet before or after school. Meetings are approximately one hour per week. These times are planned to suit the schedule of both the mentor and the student. Activities include playing games, helping with social skills development, and assisting with academics.

George D. Lisby Elementary School at Hillsdale

“Bigs in School” volunteers spend one hour per week at lunchtime or after school in a one-to-one relationship with a student in grades 2–5. Mentors provide support, guidance, and encouragement. The relationship promotes a positive school experience for the child: good attendance, positive peer and adult relationships, a positive attitude, and academic enrichment. The sessions include a variety of activities such as self-esteem building, social skill development, and academic assistance.

Hall’s Cross Roads Elementary School

Harford County Public Schools
Work Experience for Students with Special Needs
The mission of the Work Experience Program for Students with Special Needs is to promote independence in the community for all young adults through work experience. Mentors work with students from age 16-21 throughout Harford County, both in the high schools and/or at their job site. Mentors volunteer for approximately one hour per week during the school day. It is the responsibility of the public school system to prepare students with special needs to become productive members of our community. Mentors can help in this transition process.

Havre de Grace Elementary School
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Maryland

Havre de Grace Middle School
Cytec Engineered Materials, Inc. - Inspire a Dream
Cytec Engineered Materials, Inc. is committed to beging and active participant in the primary education of Harford County school children. We will demonstrate our spirit of community service by serving as mentors and tutors. The goal of this program is to encourage the students' enthusiasm for higher learning outside the traditional educational environment. We believe this partnership will deeply touch the lives of the children of Havre de Grace and the employees of Cytec Engineered Materials, Inc. Employees of Cytec are encouraged to become mentors.

Hickory Elementary School
Hickory Elementary School mentors presently work with students in grade 5, but mentors are needed for children in all grade levels. Activities include assisting with projects, helping with academics, and just being a good friend. Mentors meet one hour a week during the school day.

Homestead-Wakefield Elementary School
Homestead-Wakefield Elementary School mentors work with students in grades 1-5. Mentors meet with students during school hours, 9-3:30, and sometimes make arrangements to meet with mentees outside of school with the permission of a parent. Mentors meet with students for one half-hour to forty-five minutes once a week, and are planned to suit the schedule of both participants.

John Archer School
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Maryland
“Bigs in School” volunteers spend one hour per week in a one-to-one relationship with a student. The mentors focus on positive peer and adult relationships, self-esteem, and social skill development. The sessions include a variety of enrichment activities to help the students experience success.

Magnolia Elementary School
CSAFE After-school Program
Magnolia Elementary School mentors work with students in grades 1-5 and meet Mon-Fri, 3:30-5:30pm. Mentors are needed to help students with homework and activities. 40 students attend the program each day.

Magnolia Middle School
The Asgard Club
The Asgard Club currently operates as an in-house mentoring program at Magnolia Middle School. Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students are matched with a volunteer MMS staff member who oversees such things as academic progress, attendance, behavior, and self-esteem. Mentors and mentees meet at the convenience of both parties during school hours. Student members also attend special group activities throughout the school year.

North Harford Middle School
Mentoring
NHMS mentors work with middle school students (primarily), and high school students on Thursdays from 2:30-4:30pm. Activities include study time, social skill development, games, and computer skills.

Southampton Middle School
The mentors at Southampton Middle School meet with selected 6th, 7th, and 8th graders during the school day on a weekly basis. Mentors will act as a friend and role model and help their mentees set personal goals. By developing an on-going relationship with a student, mentors can address such issues as school success, self-esteen and social skills development.

William Paca-Old Post Road Elementary School
CSAFE
The CSAFE Program works with students (grades 1-5). The program meets Mon, Wed, Thurs, and Fri from 3:30-5:30pm. Mentors meet with mentees anywhere from a half-hour to one hour per week. They assist with homework, play board games, or share a special hobby.
