PARENTS OF TRUANT STUDENTS SERVE DETENTION IN JAIL
Several Harford County parents will spend time in the Harford County Detention Center for failing to send their children to school. Lori Rollins will serve five days in jail after Judge Victor Butanis found her guilty and imposed a sentence of ten days with half the sentence suspended. The Judge commented before sentencing that Rollins' conduct was unconscionable, outrageous and inexcusable.
Judge Mimi Cooper convicted Pamela White and Lori Ayres in seperate cases of failing to send their children to school. Each of them received a ten day sentence and will have to serve three days of that sentence in the Detention Center. A fourth defendant received a Probation before Verdict. All of the defendants will be on probation which includes the requirement that their child attend school, and in some cases counselling. The trials were held in the District Court for Harford County on 29 October 2003.
The cases were brought by Pupil Personnel Worker fromHarford County Public Schools working together with the State's Atorney's Office. State's Attorney Joe Cassilly sent letters to the parents telling them to resolve their child's attendance problems with the school or face criminal prosecution. The charges in these cases were filed when the Pupil Personnel Workers notified the State's Attorney that the parents were not cooperating.
