INTERNET SCAMMER CONVICTED


Robert Wilson Hanks was convicted of a Theft Scheme over $500 in Harford County District Court. Harford County sheriff's deputies were first contact by victims in California who reported that they had sent money for items purchased through an internet auction to a person in Harford County, but that they had not received the items. Dep Ryan Hall investigated and traced checks and money orders totalling over $4,200 from the victims to Hanks account. The thefts were committed during October and November of 2004. Hanks admitted the thefts to Deputy Hall.

Hanks entered a guilty plea and was sentenced to a$5,000 fine and 15 years in prisonwith all but 60 days suspended. He will be placed on probation and will have to pay restitution to the victims as a condition of the probation.

Harford County State's Attorney Joe Cassilly complimented the police saying. "Although internet crimes are relatively new the police in this county are doing a good job responding to it and we will prosecute it.Criminalsneed to know that thay can be detected and punished."
