METHADONE MOTHER PLEADS GUILTY IN CHILD’S DEATH
Kelley Jean Briggs plead guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of her sixteen month old son, Ashton Timothy Preston. The plea was taken before Judge William Carr in the Circuit Court for Harford County on 15 February 2006. Briggs was sentenced to serve five years in prison and another five years were suspended. She will be on three years probation upon her release.
The charges arose when it was determined that Briggs had inadvertently administered methadone that was prescribed for her to her child on 15 December 2004. The case was investigated by the Harford County Sheriff's Office and prosecuted by Assistant State's Attorney Sal Fili.
