FORMER REGISTERD NURSE CONVICTED IN CHILD'S DEATH
Elaine Marie Butler, 54, a former Registered Nurse was convicted by a Jury on September 26, 2007, of Involuntary Manslaughter in the death of a 16 month old toddler, Ashton Timothy Preston, who drank methadone and who was residing with his mother, Kelly Briggs at the home of the defendant, at 2603 Castleton Road in Darlington. Judge Stephen M. Waldron presided at the trial. Salvatore Fili, Assistant State's Attorney, prosecuted the case and the Harford County Sheriff's Office investigated the case.
The charges arose when police determined that the defendant had inadvertently given the child a cup containing methadone intended for the child's mother and then, after being immediately told what it contained, ignored the child's symptoms of sedation and coma and did no call 911 or seek any other help.
A sentencing hearing is schedule for September 28, 2007 at 3:00 PM, before the Honorable Stephen M. Waldron in the Circuit Court for Harford County.
