CASSILLY IS NATIONAL DISTRICT ATTORNEYS PRESIDENT
Harford County State's Attorney Joseph I. Cassilly became president of the National District Attorneys Association at the association's annual conference on 14 July in Tucson, Arizona. The NDAA is the oldest and largest organization representing prosecutors. It was founded in 1950 and has over 7,000 members.
Cassilly has been a prosecutor for over 30 years and has served on the Board of Directors of NDAA for the passed 10 years. He has served as president-elect for the last year. "I have learned a lot during my time as president-elect," said Cassilly, "I have had a chance to work with members of Congress, particularly; Senators Mikulski and Cardin and Congressmen Bartlett and Ruppersburger, introducing and supporting legislative initiatives of critical importance to prosecutors battling criminals." State and local prosecutors handle 95% of the criminal cases in the United States. "NDAA rallied prosecutors from every State to pursue funding for training, technical assistance, and issues that improve the plight of victims of violence and child abuse," said Cassilly as he accepted the gavel from outgoing president James Fox of California.
Cassilly joined the State's Attorney's office in 1977 and was elected State's Attorney in 1982 and has been re-elected six times. He served two terms as president of the Maryland State's Attorneys Association and three terms as NDAA treasurer.
Serving the NDAA, Cassilly has met with three U.S. Attorneys General. "NDAA is often called upon to give the perspective of local prosecutors to national policy makers," said Cassilly. NDAA works with the American Bar Association, the National Association of Attorneys General, the U. S. Departments of Justice, Homeland Security and Transportation, the U.S. Sentencing Commission and many federal agencies to shape the direction of criminal justice policy.
Cassilly served with the U. S. Army Rangers in Viet Nam. He graduated with a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Arizona and earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Baltimore in 1977. "I think that it is an interesting twist of fate that I graduated from college in Tucson and return 34 years later to accept the honor of being president of NDAA," said Cassilly
