Under the Cancer Prevention Education, Screening and Treatment Program seven sites are targeted:
- Colon and rectum
- Breast
- Prostate
- Oral
- Lung and bronchus
- Melanoma
- Cervix
These cancers are targeted because they can be prevented, detected early and treated or are a major cause of cancer death in Maryland.
Incidence Rate:
Approximately 24,500 new cancer cases are reported to the Maryland Cancer Registry each year an estimated 990 are from Harford County.
Maryland total age-adjusted cancer rate is 486 per 100,00 population which is statistically higher than the national rate of 472 per 100,000 population.
Mortality Rate:
A total of 10,240 Marylanders died from cancer in 2000, with 358 deaths reported in Harford County.
Maryland total age-adjusted cancer mortality rate of 209 per 100,000 population, is higher then the National rate of 199 per 100,000. Maryland ranks 11th among states in cancer mortality. Harford County mortality rate is 186 per 100,000 population which is significantly higher then the mortality rate of all Marylanders.
